Don Dixon (68) passed away peacefully on February 15, 2024, surrounded by those who loved him dearly. Don was born in Los Angeles, splitting his childhood years between his family in Los Angeles and his family in the Barrio Viejo in Tucson, eventually settling in Tucson full time as a young adult.
Don had many different avenues of employment. He was Employee of the Year for the Salvation
Army, a custodian in a penthouse in LOS Angeles as well as bars on Tucson's 4" Avenue, brick
layer and provided night security for Tucson festival events. His most recent employment was as
the co-founder of El Sendero from 2013 to 2024, where he provided meals and supplies to those in need. With his help, El Sendero eventually became a landscaping business where he hired and worked with the homeless/near homeless population to provide landscaping opportunities around Tucson, Marana and Green Valley. Giving a hand-up to whomever he could.
Don had a constant thirst for adventure, beginning as a young boy traveling with his grandfather in his semi-truck, clocking many miles together. He loved exploring whether it be in Tucson, going to museums, festivals, concerts, anything to do with history or to Patagonia and The White Mountains where he enjoyed camping, fishing, and boating. Don was always ready for the next fun event. If you started a sentence saying, 'today we should..., he'd immediately say Let's go!' No matter what it was. He loved gatherings/BBQs with friends where he'd get games going, especially Dominos. And will forever be a diehard Washington Redskins/Commanders fan.
Don is someone who can truly say he never met a stranger. He loved to hear the stories of those that he met along the way. People were always drawn to him for his kind listening ear, feeling how he was very interested in what they had to say.
For many years, Don volunteered at Southside Presbyterian Church serving breakfast to those in
need every Monday and Friday morning. He also filled and delivered food boxes for the New
Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church. When he finished serving to the needs of the attendees, he would take any extra boxes of food to his complex to help his neighbors, especially seeing to the needs of the women and children. Don's strong faith brought great happiness to his life and guided him to touch countless others.
While Don's physical journey has ended, memories of Don will continue within the lives he
touched. His continuous curiosity, adventurous spirit and deep love for everyone he met along the way will remain a testament of a life well-lived.
Don is survived by his beloved Jack Russell, Dolly, his adopted family, Michael and Diane Knoll,
their Golden Retriever, Miller, and an incredible number of friends that he met along the way.
Rest in peace, Don. Happy Trails to you...until we meet again.
