James Dale Caulkins, 76, passed away on July 6, 2024, in Tucson, Arizona. Dale, born in Washita County, Oklahoma, was the ninth of ten children born to Robert Henry Caulkins and Mocalena Brehm Caulkins. Dale spent time growing up in Oklahoma and Arizona before marrying in Porterville, California, and moving to the Portland, Oregon area.
Joyous and happy memories of time spent with Dale live with his four children: Mocalina Nicole, Kevin James, Brent Dale, and Megan Thressa. Dale has six grandchildren: Adaela, Corbin, Aiden, Ava, Ruby and Charlotte.
Dale embraced entrepreneurship, successfully running his own business for nearly 50 years. A painting contractor by trade, he also dabbled in construction and carpentry as well as automobile and boat restoration. Dale enjoyed fixing, building, and creating, sharing this love of working with his hands with his children, two of whom became painting contractors as well.
Dale also held a great appreciation for the outdoors, spending countless hours with his children and extended family and friends camping in the Mt. Hood forest, waterskiing on the Columbia and Willamette Rivers, and swimming in the Pacific Ocean. He also delighted in hiking and sightseeing along the Columbia River Gorge and many other lakes, mountains and campgrounds in the Pacific Northwest. Dale spent the latter years of his life back in Arizona, enjoying the warmer weather and the beautiful scenery found in the rock formations and canyons of this desert state.
Dale enjoyed people, and he built innumerable lasting friendships and business relationships. An optimist with an open heart, Dale was quick to see the potential and greatness within everyone. His presence and kindness will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His spirit of pure joy and happiness, and his love of life and family, will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to be a part of his life.
A celebration of life will be held in mid-August at the Oregon Coast.
May you rest in peace, Dale. You will be forever remembered.
