To God be the glory.
James Lewis Clark was born in Baltimore, MD at John Hopkins Hospital on February 23, 1947 to Mary Ellen Clark and Edward Clark. He was the brother of Barbara D. Waller of Chicago, IL and Edward L. Clark of Baltimore, MD. I will always recall two songs we both loved listening to with our great-grandmother as she read her bible, “In the Upper Room” and later “Peace Be Still”.
In his earlier years, we lived in East Baltimore before moving in 1954 to Whitter Avenue in West Baltimore where we attended Frances Street Elementary School, PS 137. Our family became members of Mt Lebanon Baptist Church and later both James and Edward became members of Troop 521 of the Boy Scouts of America. James attended Lamel Junior High School before graduating from Carver High School in 1966. From an earlier relationship, he had a daughter, Terese Clark.
After graduating from Carver High, he joined the US Navy completing his boot camp at the Great Lakes Training Base in Illinois. At the same time, his brother Edward was attending Electrician’s Mates School at the same base. With both of them each attending training so close to Chicago, they were able to spend time with Barbara together. Later, after completing boot camp, James was ordered to US Naval Communication School in Norfolk, VA before receiving orders to the west coast and on to Vietnam; while Edward was ordered to the east coast and Mine Warfare School in Charleston, SC. In Vietnam, he served as part of the River Patrol Force in the Mekong Detra area. After his tour of duty in Vietnam was completed, he was transferred to Naval Communication Station in Derry, Ireland. While stationed in Ireland, he would often meet with Uncle Ben whenever his ship would dock at Holy Locks, Scotland Submarine Base. During his time in Ireland, he met and married Mavis. From that union, they had a daughter, Kim.
After completing his tour of duty and serving in the Navy, he returned with his family to the states and settled in Baltimore, MD. He found work at the US Coast Guard Shipyard where he worked in the electrical shop along with his brother. Later, he trained as a heating and air conditioning repairman, working as a Sear’s repairman and later for the Harford Refrigeration Company.
Along the way, they had two boys, Martin and Kieran. In 1982, James decided to move with his family to Tucson, AZ where he lived until his death on Sunday August 11, 2019. James is proceeded in death by his wife Mavis. He leaves behind two daughters, Kim Clark and Terese Clark and two sons, Martin Clark and Kieran Clark, his sister Barbara Waller and his brother Edward (Yvette) Clark as well as his uncles Walter Lee, Marion McLarin and Benjamin Lewis McLarin. James will be remembered by fourteen grandchildren and twenty-one great grandchildren in Arizona, as well as the many cousins, nieces, nephews and other friends and family members on the east coast.
For James, the storm is over, the winds and the waves have been stilled, and the Lord said, “Peace be Still”.
