Leon C. Sempkowski peacefully passed away on May 8th, 2023 at age 80. He was born on June 5th, 1942 in Perth Amboy, New Jersey.
A talented baseball player, he had aspirations of joining the Baltimore Orioles and even tried out for the team. Instead, he graduated from Mount St. Mary’s College in Emmitsburg, Maryland and later the University of Maryland Dental School in Baltimore.
Leon was a Captain in the United States Air Force. His last assignment was at Davis-Monthan Air Base. Afterwards, he remained in Tucson and was a local family dentist for many years.
He had a big heart. Leon would treat his patients regardless of their ability to pay and volunteered countless hours at St. Elizabeth’s of Hungary Clinic.
However, he will most be remembered for his sense of humor. If you were his patient, you experienced trying to keep your mouth open while laughing. If you were his friend, you knew him as the life of the party. If you traveled with him on one of his regular ski trips, you knew his personality on the slopes would only be outshined by his very bright, unmatched outfits.
Leon is survived by his daughters Jill (Anthony) Sempkowski Bradley and Lorin Sempkowski, granddaughter Taylor (Eric) Bradley Mills and grandson Hunter Bradley.
He is preceded in death by his partner Sandra “Sandee” Gage Sempkowski, parents Chester Sempkowski and Stella Derent Sempkowski, brother Chester “Chet” Sempkowski and sister Anna “Ann” Sempkowski Adcock.
At his request, there will be no formal service. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to El Rio Foundation.
