Mary Jo Johnson (88) of Tucson, Arizona, transitioned to be with her Heavenly Father and Jesus on June 8, 2023.
Mary Jo loved her family and friends. She enjoyed hiking, boating, listening to music especially live concerts in the park, photographing desert sunsets, and reading. She always enjoyed having a couple of faithful dogs around, too. She also teased and joked with that wonderful sense of humor that she maintained throughout her life. Most recently she attended services at Oasis Church Tucson (oasisaz.com) back when the congregation met at the Desert Sky Middle School.
Mary Jo married Kendall Johnson while they both attended college. She earned a master’s degree in mathematics and he earned his juris doctorate. After graduation the family moved to California and eventually settled in Encino, where her children grew up. Kendall and Mary Jo divorced in the 1970s but remained friends.
Straight out of university Mary Jo began working at various facilities of Hughes Aircraft Company in the Los Angeles area. She made many friends at work. Towards the end of her career, Hughes Missile Systems Group in Canoga Park was bought out, thus beginning a series of different employers due to acquisition. She relocated to Tucson with one of those acquisitions, eventually retiring from Raytheon as a systems analyst.
Mary Jo was a loving mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She is survived by her daughters Cheryl Stansberry and Kimberlee Crittenden, granddaughters Tami MacRae and Teresa (Justin Burton), and three great granddaughters. She was also close with her five nephews and their families.
She is preceded in death by her parents (Harold and Mary), two sisters (Dorothy and Phyllis) and her brother (Lee) who will see her in heaven and rejoice with heavenly love.
The family thanks the caregivers of Sunrise at River Road for the loving care they provided in her final years. We also thank Mary Jo’s neighbors and friends who have helped us for years in so many ways.
No memorial service is planned at this time. A celebration of life will be held in Southern California after several months.
We would love to hear about good times with and favorite memories of Mary Jo Johnson in the comments or at her celebration of life. God be with you and bless you until we meet again.
