It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Richard Gerrard Gomez, Sr. on December 11, 2024.
Richard was born in Pomona, California on September 2, 1947, to Jose and Irene Gomez. His family lineage through his mother’s side includes the founders of the City of Pomona. Shortly after high school, Richard was drafted into the United States Army and served in the Vietnam War. While serving in the Army, he developed his passion for cooking, which led to his career in restaurant management later in life.
Richard found his career calling as a Counselor at Hueneme High School, where his caring, supportive nature allowed him to connect with the students and guide them lovingly through sometimes difficult life circumstances. After thirty-two years of mentoring numerous students, Richard decided to retire and spend time with his family, which eventually led him to relocate to Tucson, Arizona, to be closer to his grandchildren.
Throughout his life, Richard touched many with his affable, warm personality. He was a friend to many, and always had a story to share. An avid reader, he was a fan of John Grisham, Stephen King, and Louis L’Amour. Richard had a passion for vintage cars, billiards, barbecuing, and gardening. If you had a question, he was your go-to guy for answers, advice, and how-to knowledge. If you needed a hand, he was there to give you the shirt off his back. He will be missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
Richard was preceded in death by his sister Marlene and his half-brother Mark.
He is survived by his son, Richard Jr. (Sarah); his daughter, Carmen and seven grandchildren - Shawn, Michael, Ava, Sophie, Hector, Lillian, and Aaron; additionally, he is survived by his siblings - Diana (Herbert), Joe (Bartola), Michael (Charlotte), Robert, Becky, and Ilene. Richard is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
Richard’s life will be celebrated with a Viewing, 3:00 PM, January 9, 2025 at Sensible Funerals & Cremation, 109 W. Grant Rd., Tucson, AZ 85705.
Burial will be held 10:00 AM, January 10, 2025 at Arizona Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery at Marana, located at 15950 N. Luckett Rd., Marana, AZ 85653.
