It is with deep sorrow and much love that we mourn the passing of Thomas Charles Ponsford, of St. David, Arizona, on April 4, 2024, at the age of 69 years. Born on July 15, 1954, in Inglewood, California, at Daniel Freeman Hospital, Tom grew up in Torrance, California. He worked in the Torrance Public Library system and pursued higher education, earning degrees and certifications from California State University, Dominguez Hills, and Virginia Tech.
Tom was known for his passionate dedication to cycling, not just as a former cyclist himself but as a revered coach who contributed significantly to the cycling world. He proudly coached the 7/11 and Jelly Belly professional cycling teams and was a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for the Olympics. His leadership and mentorship helped shape the futures of countless athletes, leaving a lasting impact on the sport he loved.
Beyond his contributions to cycling, Tom made significant contributions to national security during his tenure in Virginia as a defense mapping agent. There, he played a pivotal role in operations that led to the freeing of captives and safeguarded the lives of many Americans, showcasing his unwavering commitment to his country.
Later, moving to Vista, California, Tom served as a city planner for Carlsbad and Orange County. His vision and dedication to community development were evident in the projects he led and the communities he helped build. Ultimately, he took his talents to St. David, Arizona, where he continued his work for Cochise County, leaving a mark on the region through his professional endeavors.
Predeceased by his parents, Betty Clair Ponsford and Douglas C Ponsford, and brother, Mark Ponsford, Tom’s memory will be cherished and kept alive by his siblings: Carol (Ponsford) Lake, Michelle Marie Ponsford, Diane (Ponsford) Long, Robert Bruce Ponsford, Steven Joseph Ponsford, and Frances Ann (Ponsford) Burnett.
Tom will be remembered as a man of principle, dedication, and immense talent. His contributions to his family, his field, and his country will not be forgotten. In honoring Tom’s legacy, let us remember the paths he paved, the lives he touched, and the difference he made in the world. May he rest in peace.
